Although the class was officially abolished in 1871 The Burakumin were officially proclaimed emancipated by the government following four years after the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Unfortunately, the group’s assimilation into the new Modern Japan hasn’t seen immediate success and still somewhat lingers to this day. The Burakumin is Japan’s “untouchables,” considered as the lowest of the low in the society. They face severe stigma and marginalization, oftentimes leading to discrimination. Despite efforts to prevent them from suffering from further negative preconceptions, there is still more to be done in order to dispel prejudices against the group. To be part of the Burakumin is to exist in a social sphere at odds with Japan’s otherwise streamlined, collectivist society.
